Africainterlligence news network had reported on may 25, 2026 that “Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) agents are trying to persuade their counterparts at the US Treasury to impose sanctions on this organisation's representatives, including Ogechukwu Nkere, its prime minister since January. The NFIU accuses the American-Nigerian of financing the activities of the Biafran separatists. When contacted by Africa Intelligence, Nkere stated that "such actions would constitute a cynical misuse of frameworks to target a legitimate self-determination and independence movement representing millions of Christians from Southeast Nigeria".
Reacting to this sinister and disgrace of Nigeria Government that ignores Boko haram, iswap, isis, fulani terrorist plus other islamic terror groups in Nigeria number over 22 rather targeting Biafra Independent Government in Exile Officials, American Ambassador Tibor Nagy has reprimanded Nigeria Government for going after the Biafra Republic Government in Exile Prime Minister who he describes as seeking justice, security, good governance and freedom for Biafra outside Nigeria.

Nkere states that he wishes to "push for crushing US sanctions on Nigeria for [its] designation of the Biafran Independence movement as terrorism and for attempting to engage in transnational repression". Nkere has managed to attract the attention of Republicans, such as the senator from Texas, Ted Cruz (AI, 15/10/25) by using the argument of an alleged "Christian genocide" taking place in Nigeria (AI, 19/07/24). It was in the name of these mass killings specifically targeting Christians that Donald Trump ordered strikes on Sokoto State (North-West) on the night of 25 December 2025, followed by the deployment of around a hundred soldiers to train the Nigerian army as well as several drones in Bauchi State (North-East) during the first quarter of 2026. In 2024, Abuja had already secured from Finland the arrest of activist Simon Ekpa, Nkere's predecessor as head of the Biafran executive in exile. Established in Europe since 2007, he was sentenced in September 2025 by the Finnish courts to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences after having "attempted to promote the independence of the so-called Biafra region in south-eastern Nigeria by illegal means". The Nigerian authorities had repeatedly tried to obtain his extradition before he was finally arrested. The founder of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has been imprisoned in Nigeria since 2021 after being kidnapped from Kenya by Nigeria Government. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 20 November 2025, during a trial held in Abuja. His movement regularly calls for a general strike, or sit-at-home, among the population of the south-east of the country where the Biafran war claimed nearly two million lives between 1967 and 1970.”
